Low-shedding dogs: the real trade-offs

Less hair around the home can mean more work at the grooming table.

Low shedding is not low maintenance

Poodles, Bichons and Shih Tzus can shed less noticeably, but their coats need consistent maintenance. Think about brushing, clipping, professional grooming and the time to help a dog feel comfortable with handling.

Compare the routines

The Standard Poodle is athletic and needs exercise and learning as well as coat care. The Miniature Poodle has similar grooming commitments in a smaller size. The Bichon Frise is a sociable companion with substantial coat maintenance.

Allergies need individual consideration

Low shedding does not mean allergy-free. Reactions differ between people and individual dogs. Do not treat a breed recommendation as evidence that a dog will be suitable for someone with allergies.

A better starting question

Ask how much coat care you can sustain over the dog’s life. If you prefer less grooming, a short-coated dog that sheds may fit your practical routine better than a low-shedding breed.
